Presentations and Tutorials

Since most edit-a-thons will attract at least a few new editors, and often more than a few, there is likely a need for at least a short “how to edit” tutorial. The person who leads this tutorial should have some familiarity with how Wikipedia works, and be ready to answer questions about it, both during and after the presentation. There are lots of example presentations out there, from the free, downloadable slide decks that Art+Feminism has put together, to presentations given by other members of the community (see an example of a new editor tutorial I posted recently to Slideshare.net, http://​bit.ly/​2qNM15i). I like to aim for presentations of twenty minutes or less, but since there is quite a bit of information for new people to absorb, and the community’s norms and best practices are very important to ultimately being successful on Wikipedia, it pays to be comprehensive on matters like the “Five Pillars of Wikipedia,” how to avoid conflicts of interest, and understanding the basic navigation of the editing menus.

Depending on the goals you’ve identified, and whether a specific theme is involved, an additional content-focused presentation or a tour could share knowledge and spark curiosity about the topic—if interesting, and logistically feasible. Just as important is identifying a focused, not too overwhelming to-do list, accumulating relevant resources (both print and digital) for research and citation within the encyclopedia.
